We know you know that your online donation software isn’t your church’s draw. The people who visit or join your church do so because of the IMPACT it has had or they believe it will have on them or in the community.
It’s because you were there for them during their darkest times. Because they encounter God there, and because they want to be a part of a church that’s serving the community and the world in its darkest corners.
But the way technology providers sometimes talk (us included), you’d think we believe someone might one day say, “Come visit my church … because we have the BEST online donation software!”
So, it seems the real question is HOW can an online donation software provider really help your church? Can it really increase giving among the group of nongivers at your church sometimes referred to as your 80% (based on the 80/20 rule).
Since its launch, has online giving made people more generous or simply moved giving online? Google “church giving stats” and you’ll find plenty of them. Often they’re lumped in with nonprofits stats, or they’re several years old, or they don’t indicate how the growth of online giving stacked up against total giving. They’re usually shared by someone with a stake in the game (like us). We all know that statistics can be deceiving.
The main reason you offer online giving or a church mobile giving app is to make giving easier, in hopes that it will increase total giving. We’re told that churches saw an 18.1% increase in online donations in 2018 (Source). But again, were gifts simply shifted from paper to online or did people truly give more?
Providing your congregation many different ways to give wherever they are or however they prefer is vitally important. But simply adding online giving as an option isn’t enough. Why?
Because the most troubling statistic is this: 83% of charitable gifts begun online are abandoned before completion (Source).
This means that the mere existence of online tithing options doesn’t ensure a gift. It means that people who are taking actual steps to give are sometimes brought to a grinding halt in the process. Do those givers return to give later? Do they later give in person? We’ll never know.
Why do these online donations get abandoned? Primarily because of frustrating and unnecessary obstacles in the giving experience. How ironic is that? The very experience that was created to make giving easier makes giving harder!
Most online giving platforms do pretty much the same thing in pretty much the same way. That means churches haven’t had a lot of options for finding a platform that actually does something besides process online gifts
